Alcaeus was a fellow countryman and contemporary of Sappho, and his beautiful and delicate poetry is often overshadowed by Sappho’s reputation. R J Dent has now translated all of Alcaeus’s Poems & Fragments from ancient Greek into lively modern English in an attempt to rescue Alcaeus’s ethereal poetry from obscurity.
There is no other published translation of Alcaeus: Poems & Fragments in existence.

Cool! A translation of Alcaeus’s work at last. Why this has taken so long to reach us I don’t know. Other (lesser) Greek poets are available, but Alcaeus has often been mentioned, but seldom translated. Way to go, R.J.

Is this all of the poems and fragments? Where can I get these?

The only reliable version of the poems and fragments of Alkaios until now was the Loeb edition. Now there is this version of yours (R. J. Dent) in paperback. I’m not sure why nobody else published Alkaios before you, but I’m very happy you translated and published this neglected author, for he is a wonderful, beautiful, thought-provoking poet.

No way! Poems and fragments of Alcaeus available in paperback! This has taken years. The Loeb version is shit. Hope this one’s better…

I love this book – there are a lot of interesting Greek cultural references. However, it’s also very English in that it could have been written by an English person living in Greece – which I think is the case.
